Overview
Why Classic Hollywood?
There are many reasons. Classic movies are a reflection of our history. Through their magic we are transported back to other times and places to recapture the atmosphere, styles and attitudes of an era now long past. Classic movies maintain a simplicity, innocence and sense of joy. After watching a classic film one knows that he has experienced something rare and unique and can feel liberated, rejuvenated and, most of all, thoroughly entertained.
Classic movies have not only touched audiences, but have also influenced the work of contemporary filmmakers. From musicals to war epics, from comedies to gritty crime dramas, each popular genre has evolved from its earliest inspirations. Consider, for instance, the evolutionary line between “Little Caesar” and “The Godfather”. Edward G. Robinson himself once called Francis Ford Coppola’s gangster epic “his grandchild”. Other examples include “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Saving Private Ryan”, and. perhaps more overtly, the remakes of such classics as “Father of the Bride” and “3:10 to Yuma”.
The stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age endure! They have maintained their popularity and longevity through their unique talent and a respect and dedication to their craft. Each player created an unforgettable presence during that period in film history when screen actors truly were “larger than life”. Were there ever better heroes than Gary Cooper and Errol Flynn? Or more romantic couplings than Clark Gable and Carole Lombard.. Comedians who could make you laugh like W.C. Fields and the Marx Brothers? Musical stars like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers? Dramatic dames like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford? Exotic females like Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo? Tough guys like Humphrey Bogart and George Raft? Or even horror stars who could match the menace of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi? These are names that continue to be recognized through home video, retrospective screenings of their films, books and even, at long last, placement on commemorative postage stamps.
Their immortality can perhaps be further demonstrated by the fact that many of these icons continue to be favorites of both professional and amateur impressionists. Jimmy Stewart’s stutter, John Wayne’s drawl, Humphrey Bogart’s lisp and Peter Lorre’s hiss are still parodied long after their passing. That unique, much-imitated quality is missing in most of today’s stars.
